What You Miss About Vacation Might Be What Your Life Is Missing

What You Miss About Vacation Might Be What Your Life Is Missing

Have you ever come home from a vacation and found yourself missing more than the destination?

Maybe it was the slower pace, the people, the conversations, or simply having time to do things you enjoy.

I've been thinking about that since returning from a wellness retreat in Greece.

In Episode 87 of Make More Love, I share some of what I discovered while I was away, and why the experience made me reconsider a few things about the life I've created at home.

Sometimes You Need Distance to See What's Happening 🌍

When you're caught up in your daily responsibilities, it's easy to lose perspective.

Before my trip, I'd been spending a lot of time and emotional energy dealing with other people's problems. There were good reasons for it, but I hadn't fully appreciated how much of my own life I'd put aside.

Being away helped me see that more clearly.

I also noticed something unexpected. I enjoyed letting other people take care of things for a change.

Someone made coffee. Someone cleared the table. Someone else handled whatever needed doing.

And I didn't always have to be the one stepping in.

It reminded me how much our everyday habits shape the roles we take on, often without thinking about them.

The Things We Miss May Be Surprisingly Simple 🍽️

One of my favorite parts of Greece was the food, but it wasn't only about what we ate.

It was the experience of preparing meals together, sitting around a table, and enjoying conversations that could last for hours.

There were no reservations to rush through and no reason to hurry home.

Since COVID, I've gotten away from entertaining at home. Most of my social meals happen in restaurants now, and I realized how much I miss having people around my own table.

That's something I'd like to change.

And it's a good example of how vacation can remind us of things we enjoy but have somehow stopped making room for.

The People Around Us Change Our Perspective 🤝

Some of the most interesting parts of the retreat came from the people I met.

There was Theo, a Greek psychiatrist whose warmth and personality made him everyone's adopted uncle.

There was Ilias, our strength trainer, who challenged some of my assumptions about the people we meet.

And there were conversations about health, philosophy, relationships, and the different ways people choose to live.

One observation stayed with me.

Some people build their routines around who they believe they are. Others allow their environment and experiences to influence how they live.

Neither approach is necessarily better.

But it raises an interesting question.

When should we shape our environment to suit our needs, and when should we allow new experiences to change us?

Coming Home Is Where the Real Test Begins 🏡

The hardest part of a great vacation can be returning to the routines you left behind.

I've gotten used to a pace that isn't particularly good for me. My schedule gets packed, I move from one commitment to the next, and I end the day thinking about everything waiting for me tomorrow.

Greece reminded me that I want something different.

More meals with friends. More time outdoors. More interesting conversations. Better nutrition. More space in my schedule.

And more opportunities to enjoy the people and experiences that make life interesting.

None of those goals is directly about my business.

But they have everything to do with how I want to design my business and my life.

What Would You Bring Home From Your Next Vacation? ❤️

Most of us think of vacation as time away from our normal lives.

But what if we used that time to learn something about how we want to live when we return?

Think about your last vacation.

  • What did you enjoy that you don't experience enough at home?

  • What responsibilities were you relieved to leave behind?

  • What people or experiences made you feel especially good?

  • What would you change about your everyday routine if you could?

You may discover that some of what you're missing is well within your reach.

The challenge is making room for it.
