When Your Marriage Feels Like One More Problem to Solve
When you are already carrying the pressure of a business, relationship problems can feel like too much.
You are working long days.
You are trying to provide.
You are keeping the company moving.
You are thinking about your team, your clients, your finances, your family, and the future.
Then your wife says you are not putting enough effort into the relationship.
And your first thought might be, “How can she say that? I’m doing all of this for us.”
That reaction makes sense.
But it also may be the moment you need to look closer.
Because your wife may not be questioning how hard you work. She may be questioning whether she still feels connected to you while you are doing it.
Hard Work Does Not Automatically Create Connection đź’Ľ
A lot of business owners believe their effort should be obvious.
You get up early. You work long hours. You solve problems all day. You take on risk. You keep pushing because you want to give your family a better life.
That matters.
But your marriage does not run only on provision.
It also needs joy, connection, attention, affection, and a sense that the two of you are still on the same side.
When those things start disappearing, the relationship can begin to feel less like a partnership and more like another obligation.
That is when a man may start wondering, “Why should I keep trying?”
The answer depends on what is actually missing.
The Relationship Drive Matrix 🔍
In this episode of Make More Love, I introduce the Relationship Drive Matrix.
It is based on two basic drives:
The emotional drive to move away from pain and toward joy.
The social drive to move away from isolation and toward connection.
When you put those together, you can start to see where your relationship may be sitting right now.
Some couples feel both pain and isolation. That is the place of sadness and loneliness.
Some couples have connection without much joy. They may still function, but the relationship feels more like duty than desire.
Some people seek joy outside the relationship because they feel disconnected inside it. That is a dangerous place because emotional or physical infidelity can begin to look tempting.
And then there is the place most couples want to be: joy and connection together.
That does not mean the relationship is perfect. It means there is enough connection and enough joy to keep coming back to each other, even when life is hard.
Why This Matters for Business Owners ⚠️
Business pressure can pull you away from both joy and connection.
You may be doing what you believe is necessary, but your partner may still feel alone. You may be building a future, but missing what is happening right now.
That is where resentment can build.
You feel unappreciated for how much you carry.
She feels unseen for what she is missing.
You both start defending your own pain instead of understanding what is happening between you.
The longer that goes on, the easier it becomes to think the relationship itself is the problem.
But sometimes the problem is that no one has identified where the relationship is actually stuck.
The Power of One 🛠️
Here is the part that can feel both encouraging and frustrating.
You do not have to wait for your partner to make the first move.
That is what I call the Power of One.
It means you can choose one small action that moves the relationship toward more connection or more joy.
Not a grand gesture.
Not a dramatic speech.
Not an overnight transformation.
One small move.
Send the text.
Make the plan.
Follow through on the thing you said you would do.
Ask a better question.
Put your phone down when she is talking.
Create one moment that reminds both of you there is still something worth protecting.
Small action does not fix everything.
But it can interrupt the pattern.
Start With a Gut Check ❤️
Here is a simple way to begin.
Think about the most recent high point in your relationship. When did you and your wife feel in sync?
Now think about a recent low point. When did things feel off, tense, or disconnected?
Then ask yourself:
When did we last feel like we had each other’s backs?
When did I last feel like I was going through this alone?
Those four questions can tell you a lot.
They help you see whether your relationship is moving toward joy and connection, or away from it.
Once you see that more clearly, choose one small thing you can do today to move in the right direction.
Why Keep Working on It?
You keep working on your relationship because the goal is not just to stay married.
The goal is to build a life that still feels good to live together.
A successful business may create opportunity, security, and pride. But if the relationship underneath your life is breaking down, the success may not feel the way you thought it would.
Your marriage deserves effort, not because you are failing, but because it is one of the most important things you are building.
And the next move may be smaller than you think.
